Got a Taste for Metalcasting and Was Hooked
“I knew [after my metalcasting internship]… that any other plan I had was out the window. This is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
Emily was studying Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, originally focused on polymers and planning to pursue a Ph.D. with the goal of going into academia.
She had some exposure to metalcasting through campus programs and student foundry work, but it wasn’t until she stepped onto a real shop floor during her internship that everything changed.
Seeing metal being melted, poured into molds, and turned into real, recognizable products made the work click in a completely different way. Before that, she didn’t have a good understanding of all the opportunities and technical challenges associated with manufacturing and didn’t think she would like working in industry.
What she found instead was a world of technical challenges, hands-on problem-solving, and an endless world of opportunities. Once she experienced it firsthand, there was no going back.
Not What You Expect: Hands-On AND High-Tech
“What really drew me into metal casting is just how unique the operation is. There's nothing like it.”
From the outside, metalcasting may seem old-school. Manual, dirty, and grimy. And it certainly can be, especially in a grain sand foundry like the one Emily works in. But it’s also extremely high-tech.
“We work hand in hand with robots every single day… we’re always thinking of ways to make things safer, easier, faster.”
It’s a mix of hands-on work and high-tech problem solving that surprises people and makes the work really exciting. “When you see iron for the first time, or a tub being made or a sink being stamped, there's nothing cooler than that.”
Working Globally to Make Products People Use Every Day
“I get to work with dozens of different people across the world every single day, making products that people love and that change their lives.”
Today, Emily works as a corporate metallurgist, supporting metalcasting operations around the world. She’s part of the advanced process materials and sustainability team at Kohler, and her role connects her with teams across many different facilities and functions. She even gets to travel to other countries occasionally to troubleshoot problems, improve systems, and launch new product lines.
